The backend is the part nobody sees and everything depends on: business rules, data, security, exchanges with other systems. Done well, you forget it. Done badly, you pay for it for years.
Depending on context, I work in Node.js (TypeScript, Express) for modern web products, or in Java with Spring Boot when the environment is already Java or the project calls for that rigour. Either way: PostgreSQL, automated tests, and a deployment pipeline that makes every update routine.
The data model first
A well-modelled database makes everything else simple. A badly modelled one makes everything else impossible to fix.
Tested before shipped
Important business rules have tests. An update can't silently break an invoice.
The right tool, not the favourite
Node.js or Spring Boot depends on what you have and who maintains it. I adapt, not the other way round.
